Crystal Ross is a Canadian artist and graduate of NSCAD U, a place where she spent much of her time in various textile departments. Drawing inspiration from her familial roots, Crystal turned to crafting hand-hooked rugs and now uses a blend of traditional hooks and punch needles in her work. Her maternal grandparents, both expert rug hookers from Chéticamp, Nova Scotia (a place steeped in rug hooking history), dedicated much of their lives to the art form: producing beautiful mats, teaching the craft, and promoting its unique local history.
Crystal’s own work is a playful take on the tradition, combining her love of Nova Scotian folk art and modern forms. Her pieces are collected throughout Canada and the United States, and she has been featured in many design publications including Label magazine, Remodelista, and Chatelaine magazine.
Based in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Crystal works from her home studio, where she shares the creative space with her family and a lively pair of animals.
